Johnny Van Brocato
MY GRANDFATHER:
Johnny (sometimes spelled Johnie on some records) was the son of Samuel (Salvatore) Brocato and Josephine Minnie Correro. He was born 22 August 1908 in Indianola, Mississippi. Johnny's parents were first generation immigrants from Cefalù, Palermo, Southern Italy. Sam came to the United States through the port of New York heading to New Orleans in 1904 aboard the ship SS. Patria from Naples with $20 in his pocket. He is said to be going to see his brother Francesco.
Johnny and Beth married in 1936 but I've not found any record of their marriage. Mississippi records are hard to come by and local records do not have any on file for them. They had three children; John Anthony Brocato who was born in Yazoo City, Mississippi, Samuel Gene Brocato born in Indianola, Mississippi, and Mary Elisabeth Brocato born in Greenville, Mississippi. They divorced sometime between 1945 and 1946 according to letters from her next husband.
Johnny went on to marry Ida Mae Pearson to whom he spent the rest of his life with. He died 10 May 1990 in Indianola, Mississippi.
